Darts goes back to medieval times when archers practiced inside in bad weather to keep their eye in so to speak. Anne Boleyn gave a set of darts to Henry VIII. In 1620 darts was played on the Mayflower by the Pilgrim Fathers to pass the journey. The numbering system as we know it today was invented by a chap called Brian Gamlin in 1896 which took some thought to come up with the system we have now. The throw-line or oche as it is known got it's name from a brewery called S. Hockey & Sons. To measure the throwing distance they would use 4 crates 2ft long end to end which was 8ft the standard throw until it was changed to 7ft 9¼ In 1927 the News of the World organised a national tournament which produced players like Jim Pike and Joe Hitchcock.
